da betsul: Arsenal fans don’t need to be reminded that this is their ninth season without a trophy.
da casino: Patrick Vieira’s last ever kick as an Arsenal player sealed the FA Cup for The Gunners in 2005; their seventh trophy in four seasons at the time. However, since then Arsenal have been a club short of success and after their Capital One Cup defeat to Chelsea yesterday, is Wenger regretting that he didn’t sign more players in the summer?
Despite Arsenal having a squad of 31 first team players, The Gunners lacked quality last night which is what Wenger is looking for if Arsenal are going to end this trophy drought this season, and that quality which was missing for Arsenal yesterday was most evidently in the striker department.
Wenger has only got three fit recognisable strikers to his name in Olivier Giroud, Nicklas Bendtner and Park Chu-Young; respectable strikers who have represented their native countries in major tournaments, and have scored vital goals for The Gunners in the past, but, if you were to compare this strike force to Chelsea’s of Torres, Ba and Eto’o, or Manchester United’s strike force which boasts Rooney, Van Persie and Hernandez, or even City’s front four of Aguero, Negredo, Dzeko and Jovetic, opposing supporters are not going to be quaking in their boots when they see Arsenal’s frontline. But this could have been avoided if The Gunners had paid the money for their targets in the summer, with Gonzalo Higuain being the most notable example.
The Argentine was Arsenal-bound, with The Gunners agreeing a fee with Real Madrid for the striker, but as the club stalled on the move and were reluctant to pay the asking price, Higuain’s patience ran out and he eventually joined Napoli. The frustration grew as Arsenal failed to seal deals for Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez, strikers who without a doubt would have changed the way Arsenal play and could have extended Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table.
When you look at the team who faced Chelsea yesterday (bar a few changes), it was nearly the Arsenal first team. Santi Cazorla, Laurent Koscielny, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky, Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud all got game time at The Emirates last night and those seven players are more than likely going to start against Liverpool on Saturday. If Arsenal were to have defeated Chelsea yesterday, the players may have become seriously fatigued, which could have potentially effected Arsenal’s push for the title. So, this could be a blessing in disguise for Wenger, but everyone related to the club knows that the Frenchman needs to add more players in January.
Wenger is the best foreign manager to ever embrace the English game. His philosophy, training methods, diets and coaching has resulted in three title winning squads since arriving in London 17 years ago, and it’s sad to see a manager of his quality go through a bad run of misfortune. But if Arsenal want to go back to the glory days of 2001-2005 where winning trophies was just a habit, then Wenger needs to break the bank in January again, and sign players of quality.
The signing of Mesut Ozil has boosted the morale for everyone related to the club after the horrendous start against Aston Villa, but, people tend to forget that Arsenal are yet to play Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United in the league this season, so despite beating teams like Norwich, Stoke and Crystal Palace, could this Arsenal team really win the title?
I think it’s too early to say, but if Arsenal were to get a result against Liverpool and Manchester United in the next two weeks, it’s going to send a message to everyone that Arsenal could well be back to their best.
