da luck: Emmanuel Adebayor is not everyone’s cup of tea.
da betsson: Disruptive, arrogant, money grabber and self-centred are just some of the many words that supporters and the media have used to describe the Togolese striker, and why it’s hard to argue against some of the claims, given some of his outbursts, the fact remains that he is a genuine striking talent that when on his game is simply unplayable. The problem is these occasions are growing few and far between, much to the frustrations of City supporters.
The scary thing about Adebayor is that he can turn on his ability like a tap and providing he is loved and worshiped by his club then he can achieve anything. Adebayor could arguably be one of the best strikers in the country or Europe, if he could get his head focused, because he simply has no weaknesses in his game other than his suspect temperament. Unfortunately the latter appears to be a part of his make-up and has subsequently proved to be his undoing.
Adebayor is your classic Jekyll and Hyde character and while there isn’t a side in the world that would pass up the opportunity to take on the former, the latter always crosses the mind of managers who would rather not take the chance. I guess when a boss as placid and patient as Arsene Wenger feels the need to cash in on a incredibly gifted striker, who is nowhere near his prime, then you understand the concerns other have.
Unfortunately the football fraternity has been littered with the likes of the Adebayor’s of this world, who will have nothing to show for their careers other than a healthy bank balance. I wouldn’t go as far as putting him in the bracket as a flawed genius, but he is certainly a player who should have been mentioned in the same breath as some of the best strikers in Europe. You do sense listening to the player that he is also believes that as well, but fails to recognise that you actually have to earn that appreciation on the pitch by proving it. He may crave a move to the Milan’s, Barcelona and Real Madrid’s of this world, but unfortunately his attitude will ensure that such a move will never materialise in the distant future.
As I say Adebayor isn’t alone and he joins a great list of unfulfilled potential that have failed to live up to their billing. If the rumours are to be believed then it looks as if English football is set to see the back of Adebayor as he looks set to move to Juventus and while the club will certainly fit with the player’s profile, it will be interesting to see if he can change the habit of a life time and get his head down and fulfil his godly talents. I for one will not be holding my breath though.
