da dobrowin: Jose is finally back at the top of the game and many expect a harsh and ruthless season ahead for the former Chelsea man, as he attempts to build a Manchester United squad capable of challenging for the title.
da casino: European football will be extremely high up on Jose’s to-do list whilst bringing in some more top names must also be up there too.
But one area that certainly needs addressing is who to cut out of the squad as the season edges closer.
As we’ve seen during Louis van Gaal’s turbulent tenure, there seems to be a lot of deadwood at the club these days – players that probably wouldn’t have made the grade during the Fergie years.
But who are these names? Here’s FIVE players who might be axed by Mourinho before the season even starts.
Antonio Valencia
It’s fair to say that Antonio Valencia has gone off the boil over the past couple of seasons at United.
He’s struggled to break back into the first-team side as Louis van Gaal prioritised youth development more often than not, meaning the former Wigan man has struggled for game time.
He’s lost some of that pace that made him so devastating during his earlier United years and it’s difficult to see him as a “key” player going forward.
Marcos Rojo
Whilst Rojo has never really struggled for game time aside from injury, he just doesn’t seem to fit the Mourinho style of centre-back.
We all know Jose loves a big, burly defender who is capable of aerial domination, and standing at just short of six feet tall, Rojo well and truly fails to fit this mould.
Adnan Januzaj
We’ve seen nothing of Adnan Januzaj over the past few seasons and it seems unlikely that Jose will throw his support behind a player who has been riddled with attitude problems.
We thought he was going to be the next big Old Trafford hero but he’s been anything but.
A questionable loan spell to Borussia Dortmund did little to help the winger’s cause, after he was branded as lazy by the Dortmund management and fans.
Ashley Young
One goal and just over 25 appearances all season last term tell you all you need to know about Ashley Young – he really is a forgotten man.
He was once a key part of the senior England squad but he has faded away quite spectacularly over the past few years.
It seems extremely unlucky that Jose will restore him to the starting eleven, especially having Henrikh Mikhtaryan now in the side.
He’s only dispatched six times in the past four years which at this level, just isn’t good enough. Bye-bye Ashley.
Joel Castro Pereira
Who I might hear you scream? Well, Pereira is United’s fourth choice goalkeeper, having joined the club as a youngster from Neuchatel Xamax as a youth.
He spent time out on-loan at Rochdale last season and despite impressing, he’s got such a job to get to the top in such a short space of time.
Expect Mourinho to let him go.
